Abstract

Objective of the study is to identify the current state of career guidance activities in the educational process in modern higher education system in order to develop a promising model of career guidance management in the universities of the Rostov region. Methodological basis of the study is grounded on classical sociological concepts of labor and professional activity (M. Weber, E. Durkheim, P. Sorokin, T. Parsons) and combines general scientific methods of analysis, elements of discursive analysis clustering by topics, as well as methods of statistical analysis of sociological data.   Results of the study. The analysis of the practices of career guidance activities in the leading universities of the Rostov region shows that specialized structures have been formed in educational institutions (career centers, career guidance departments, competence centers) that ensure the implementation of career guidance at all stages of the educational path – pre-university, university and postgraduate. Various formats of interaction with students are being introduced: information and educational events, professional diagnostics, counseling, organization of internships, job fairs, interaction with the employers. Special conditions are being created in order to support the students’ educational and career paths and increase their adaptability to the demands of the labor market. However, significant problems have been identified: duplication of functions between the departments, lack of coordination between the participants in career guidance, and blurred areas of responsibility. It reduces the integrity of the approach and the effectiveness of the implemented practices. Thus, despite the institutional diversity and active implementation of career guidance mechanisms, the system as a whole does not achieve the required level of consistency and requires a transition to a more integrated management model of career guidance activities. Prospects of the study will focus on the development and implementation of educational and management initiatives that enhance the popularity of career guidance practices and its application in pre-university and university locations.
