Abstract
The article provides a description of the scientific heritage of academician Y.A. Polyakov - prominent Soviet and Russian researcher in twentieth century. Particular attention is paid to the role of Y.A. Polyakov in the development of the humanities in the North Caucasus, scientific training, work as a member of the editorial board and responsible editor of the third volume of "History of the North Caucasus." The significance of ideas and scientific- organizational experience of Y.A. Polyakov in modern Caucasus studies is revealed.
