Abstract
The problem of maintaining the status quo of social identity is described in the article, and the adaptive mechanisms that are activated in the situation of threat to one’s personal and social self-esteem are analyzed. The strategies of maintaining and developing positive social identity, that are described from the positions of a theory of social identity, allow to understand the mechanism of functioning of «cognitive alternatives».
