Abstract
In the article, the authors try to identify the features of the recovery and trends of identification of Slavic peoples (ethnic groups) in the South of Russia. Slavic peoples constitute absolute majority of the population of the Russian Federation - more than 82%. At the same time Slavic peoples are the basic in ethnic and demographic structure of the population in the territories and regions of the South of Russia. The prospect of preserving their ethnic identity in terms of cross-border regions with high level of migration, population mobility and gaining momentum assimilation process looks risky exactly to the peoples of Slavic group. On the example of a wide range of statistical data and in-depth interviews the authors show the significant reduction of many Slavic ethnic groups, which occurs by their ethnic consolidation with Russian. However, assimilation factor could not compensate natural decline and migration of Slavic peoples in Rostov region. In this respect Krasnodar region more well-being due to its attractiveness. The article emphasizes that general civil consolidation of population in the South of Russia is impossible without taking into account traditions and specifics of culture of Slavic peoples in the region. They currently experience the risks of ethnic segregation, provoked by the aggravation of relations between Russia and the states of the former Soviet Union and former Eastern European block.
