Abstract
The article discusses the transition from national to European identity within the European Union. Based on the works of the classics of European thought, such as B. Anderson, J. Habermas and other, the analyses of approaches to the definition of national and European identities is made. The basic functions of identity are described, the authors attempt to identify the main markers of identity that are favourable to the substitution of national identity by European among the citizens of the EU and contributed to its spread.
