Abstract
The article is devoted to the formation of regional mentality of the British. The authors speculate on the complexity of historical processes, highlight the uniqueness of geographic position and geopolitical status of Great Britain. Multiethnic composition and class division of the population are also taken into consideration to provide rationale for the emergence of a peculiar type of mentality, composite mixed-type mentality. The importance of a language factor as one of the main factors of forming regional mentality is stressed. Causal relationship of language and non-language factors of developing the regional mentality is considered. Among the language factors affecting the mentality and identity of the British the authors single out specific linguistic mapping of the world, unique concepts of the British linguistic culture, customs and traditions of Great Britain. The research is conducted using sociolinguistic analysis on the basis of correlation of language and social phenomena in the paradigms of linguistic pragmatics. The authors introduce a novel term “regional mentality of mixed type”.
