Abstract
The article examines various explanations of the possibility of harmonization of the relationship between the private and public spheres of human existence as one of the main conditions of social order. The authors focus on the history of philosophy from Aristotle to R. Rorty, the representative of the philosophy of pragmatism. It is also shown that all explanations were based on that or other understanding of the human essence.
