Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of tolerance, in the context of which the phenomenon of ethnic prejudices is examined in detail both at the theoretical plane and at level the data of sociological research. The article outlines the idea of the primacy of ethnic "we" as an opposition of the image of "non-we" in relation to the construct of tolerance. The author disputes the position that there is no intolerance in the modern open society. According to the author, ethnic prejudices are based on a system of negative ethnic stereotypes with which they are united by such properties as stability, consistency and emotionality. The article considers emotional, cognitive and behavioral components of this phenomenon and discusses the reasons of their formation. These include competition between groups for power and status, the marginalization of social identity, family socialization and perception of a real or perceived threat and danger from another group. The theoretical positions are illustrated by the data of sociological research carried out under the guidance of the author.
