Abstract
The article considers one of the basic concepts of sociology of family – life cycle of the family. Given its definition, examines the main approaches are highlighted cognitive basis for the typology of stages within the life cycle. The feature of the article is that it reveals problems with the position of the opposition of the two leading approaches prevailing in the study of the family: familism (crisis, alarmist) and evolutionary. It is noted that the introduction of the concept of "life cycle of the family" in the scientific revolution took place in the 60 years of XX century because of the collapse of the traditional family and the desire of a certain part of the scientific community to create an ideal model of family development from its creation to decay at a certain period of time.
