Abstract
The article deals with the problem of manipulation of the mass consciousness in the modern Russian and foreign media. The author shows how in the conditions of the development of information and communication technologies the role of professional ethics of a journalist is increasing. Various studies have documented a decline in trust in media, which is largely due to the decline in the professional ethics of journalists, amount of intentional and unintentional errors, and the use of media as a tool in information wars. The author analyzes examples of the manipulative influence of modern media and shows the specificity of the influence of new media on the mass consciousness. In the context of the transition to a networked society and the ever-increasing role of information processes, the growth of social tension and confrontation, both within the country and in the international arena, it is necessary to turn to the fundamental principles of professional ethics. The author shows that not adhering to the norms of professional ethics adversely affects not only the media system, the level of trust in it, but also the social situation as a whole, contributing to social tension, the formation of feelings of fear, loss, and lack of guidelines.
