Abstract

The article analyzes the philosophical foundations of the devaluation of personal identity in the context of the philosophy of postmodernism. Postmodernism proclaims the «death of the subject». In the place of the subject and object, the text is put, in relation to which both the subject and reality are represented only by random, temporary functions. The principle of wholeness, organization, system, both the external world and the internal human world and its life are denied: the principle of singularity is proposed instead. As a result, postmodernism, destroys not only the inner world of man and his subjectivity and identity, but also the world of external, objective reality in principle. Instead of the personal development and progress of the individuality and identity of the individual, postmodernism proposes a «deconstruction».The author comes to the conclusion that the postmodern conception of an individual's subjectivity and identity is the philosophical self-consciousness of the average man, the rentier, confused by the threats of the dehumanization of the western «progressive» consumer society, mass culture, globalization and totalitarian corporations.
