Abstract

The article analyzes the methodological basis for the research of the institutional nature of professional and amateur sports. The author comes to the conclusion that the traditional classification of sports into professional and amateur is a historical vestige.  The deepening of professionalization and commercialization of sports activities has led to the merger of these two historically opposite forms of organization of sports. Modern professional sport includes the Olympic movement and sport of high achievements. While the commercialization of amateur sports became possible only in those spheres where the consumer product meets the leisure needs.
