Abstract
Demonstrative consumption as a model of social behavior penetrated into the very fabric of social relations, becoming a mass practice and an acceptable model of behavior. What is so attractive in the demonstrative consumption to those who use it in their consumer practices? Why is it gaining such rapid spread in Russia among various segments of the population and age groups? What is the social attraction and strength of the ideology of demonstrative consumption? How is demonstrative consumption related to archaic trends in the development of modern Russian society? The authors try to give answers to these and other questions in this article by expanding the logic of research in such a way that the phenomena under study appear as interconnected by mutual influence. The strengthening of the position of archaization in the mass consciousness of the Russian population contributes to the wider dissemination of practices of demonstrative consumption as simplified, understandable, predictable in a complex society, and these practices, in turn, "block" in the mass consciousness the very possibility of adopting and implementing more complex, innovative, creative ways of solving social objectives and problems, since their influence on the scale of society as a whole is characterized in terms of spiritual and intellectual degradation.
