Abstract
The article analyzes the global aspects of the development of nationalism as a form of regionalization and separatism. It is concluded that nationalism plays a key role in the political organization and ideological support of regionalist and separatist movements, which find in it a source for their own legitimation. It is noted that nationalism in this regard helps not only to stimulate the cultural and historical trauma of the separated people, but also to construct ethnic myths that contribute to the symbolic separation of peoples and territorial entities. At the same time, regionalism can be a rather weak form of separatism, what is more, be a completely acceptable and partly progressive element of federalization.
