Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of transformation of historical consciousness within the framework of post-modern culture, the dominant features of which are heteronomy and pluralism, lack of center and periphery, doubt in authority, suspiciousness towards power, denial of any hierarchy and claims to possess absolute truth. Under such conditions, a common vision of history becomes problematic - and the attempts of nation-states, driven by the ideological crisis, to build consistent historical discourses inevitably face a growing variety of versions of the past. Memory of the past both facilitates and challenges collective identities. This is the contradictory nature of post-modern historical consciousness.
