Abstract
There considered the instruments of the social networks used for the mass mobilization as a driving force of political protests. The research of Russian and foreign sociologists devoted to the problems of factors contributing to political protests is critically analyzed; in particular, it is noted that the role of “mass self-communication” is underestimated (M. Castells). It is especially noted that in social networks the practice of staging the common interests create artificial protest risks and purposefully traumatize people's consciousness are spread. The conclusion is that the functionality of social networks is ambivalent: on the one hand, they promote people's communication and their creative activities, but on the other hand, social networks can be used by the opposition political forces to organize protests.
