Abstract
The article is prepared on the basis of historical documents, archival materials, literary sources, periodicals, statistical data and state acts, traces the one-and-a-half-century evolution of library science on the Don. Libraries, from elementary book depositories, responding to the challenges of the time, changing their appearance, expanding their functions, preserving traditions and mastering new technologies, in the 21st century are the basic structures of the development of the population of the Rostov region as a modern information society. The most important condition for building up spiritual and intellectual potential.
