Abstract

Objective of the study is to evaluate the level of awareness about type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among students, and to identify the correlation between the level of awareness of respondents about T2DM and their gender.   The methodological basis of the research. The sample totaled 280 respondents (n=280). Inclusion criteria: students of different faculties, divided into 2 groups: 202 of them were women and 78 were men. The study was conducted on the basis of Rostov State Medical University. The main research instrument is an online questionnaire, which is compiled in accordance with the principle of validity. The questionnaire comprised sections about general knowledge of diabetes and respondent's self-assessment of health. We used the MS Excel program and the manual data processing for statistical processing and evaluation of the data obtained. The comparison method was used in the analysis of the data. Statistical criterion for the significance of differences: U – the Mann-Whitney test.   Research results showed that gender of respondents was not significantly associated with the level of awareness about type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data analysis showed that respondents have a sufficient level of knowledge about T2DM.   Prospects of the study: it is necessary to educate people about type 2 diabetes in order to improve the quality of primary prevention of the T2DM and to reduce its prevalence in society. The risk of diabetes in the general population can be prevented by proactive public T2DM awareness campaigns.
