Objective of the study is to determine the systemic causes of the emergence of patriotic ideas in the context of the Russian and Western worldview systems, as well as to identify similar and different signs in the perception of the phenomenon of patriotism in different cultures. The methodological basis of the research is based on general scientific methods, the most important is historical and comparative analysis. Research results. The main stages and key differences between the emergence and evolution of patriotism in the Western and Russian context are revealed, it is shown that, unlike the Western model, Russian patriotism had a pronounced statist and supranational character, which carried and continues to carry some risks. Is defined that at the present stage, the need to develop supranational forms of patriotism faces not only Russia, which retains a multinational character, but also Western societies, whose national and cultural heterogeneity is constantly increasing. Prospects of the study. Prospects for the study of the phenomenon of patriotism are determined by the currently important tasks related to the stabilization of the social and political situation in Russia, the need for changes in functioning socio–cultural institutions in order to get the country out of a protracted systemic crisis. Thus, there is a need to identify problems and contradictions that have a destabilizing effect on the formation of modern Russian identity and patriotism. Keywords:patriotism, nationalism, national state, collective identity, national identity, national consciousnessAuthor Biographies
