Abstract

This paper studies the relationship of social resources, the components of the adaptive capacity of social actors in the situation of a particular risk, and the choice of strategies and ways of adapting to everyday risks. The authors introduce advanced sociological understanding of the concept of “adaptation to everyday risks” through justification of its relationship with the basic concepts of sociology of risk and adaptation. Based on the analysis of scientific literature, classification of adaptation strategies and ways of adapting to everyday risks is implemented. The authors proposed a new variant of the empirical interpretation and operationalisation of “social resources” and showed the productivity of its use in empirical sociological research. The paper analyses the results of a sociological survey conducted in 2013 in one of the Russian regions in the situation of a particular risk. Based on the analysis of empirical data, the groups of different adaptation strategies are identified. Using a comparative analysis of features of actualisation of social resources, the components of adaptive capacity are identified. The authors conclude that the main factors for successful adaptation to the risk (or to achieve a certain status of security) are to reduce the risk to an acceptable level and the development of adaptive capacity at the expense of the growth of trust in public authorities and other decision-makers in the situation of a particular risk.
