Abstract

The paper covers comparative analysis of the results of two pieces of sociological research of student community that took part in 1991 in USSR and in 2013 in Armenia, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Both pieces of research have targeted same typological pairs of students, differentiated by their social mindsets. They differ in social well-being, perception of local social environment, family values and traditions, career and professional development and specifics of the mindset of the youth. The research covers characteristics and foundations of student optimism, romanticism and pessimism. Different mindsets regarding role and function of parents in the life of the youth were determined, and political, religious and other trends in youth life-purpose shaping were discovered. Determining common authority figures for different groups of the youth enabled to see the changes in the most important social and psychological mindsets for different generations. Another important topic is the analysis of changes in professional preferences and mindsets regarding their future jobs. Analysis of the major triggers of shame, fear and rebellion in the youth, combined with their estimations of success in life, enabled us to see the structure of main social values of modern young people.
