Abstract
The article is devoted to analysis of the role of non-profit organizations and civil initiatives in preserving historical memory of the war and protection of historical facts from falsification. The author provides examples of Russian social organizations with the primary purpose of perpetuating the memory of heroes and events of the war years, moral and patriotic education of the youth, and the education of citizens. Historical memory of the Great Patriotic War is one of few factors that unite the majority of the population of Russia, irrespective of religion, education and social status. Victory in the Great Patriotic War is a source of pride for all citizens of Russia, and an event uniting state and society.Active citizens, leaders of local authorities, representatives of trade unions and voluntary movements, religious leaders and just concerned citizens take part in activities to support veterans and to perpetuate the memory of the war. Among the most important social events, activities and events dedicated to the Victory Day celebration, the author highlights the Immortal Regiment and St. George Ribbon campaigns, activities for the conservation and protection of war monuments, moral and patriotic, and cultural and educational activities in numerous nonprofit organizations jointly with the state. In conclusion, an assessment is provided of the activities of the "third sector" to preserve and protect the historic memory of the war, as well as prospects for interaction between the state and civil society for the preservation of common historical memory.
