Abstract

Based on Russia-wide surveys conducted by the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISRAS) in monitoring regime, the article considers the probability of formation “revolutionary situation” in modern Russia and the growth of mass protests of the “lower classes”.Comparison of the survey results, conducted in the spring of 2016, with the previous “waves” proves that in the near future (a year or two) “revolutionary situation” will remain for Russia only as a “dangerous ghost” — mass protests like the Ukrainian Maidan Revolution in 2013—2014, or even like the events of 2011—2013, will only be a potential threat, rather than a reality. Particularly, this is justified because of the fact that in 2015 there was observed, although slightly higher, a still moderate level of personal participation in various massive protests, and at that time, 2—4% of Russians were involved in them. Moreover, modern protest actions are mainly economic in nature: there are protests against redundancies and rising prices, but they are not against the government. There is an interesting paradox: many people protest against the existing social and economic “game rules”, but their protest is not consolidated; the protest against the existing political institutions has its “leaders” (the liberal opposition), but this protest is much less massive. At the same time we should pay attention to the dangerous phenomenon of relatively high volatility of protest activity characteristics — Russian citizens are able to change abruptly their social and political preferences in response to the “annoying” events.
