Abstract
The article examines modern forms and methods of interstate confrontation, identifies the causes of the escalation of problems in international relations, the emergence of new challenges and threats to the national defense and security of the Russian Federation. The functions of the national defense management are defined to neutralize challenges and threats to national security not only on the territory of the Russian state, but also abroad.
