Abstract
In the article the author reveals the regional characteristics of kidnapping in the Republic of Dagestan. Since the 1990s kidnapping in Russia have become a real criminal craft. The situation in the Republic of Dagestan is connected with traditional values (adat), with economic crisis, geographical position of the country, and also with rising crime in some neighboring republics, where criminal groups consider ransom for kidnapped people as important source for their activity. Worrying factor is the strengthening of cruelty and cynicism in the commission of these crimes, as well as their low detection rate (65–70%) and an increase in the number of crimes. The author identifies groups of people, often becoming victims of these crimes. He also shows the reasons of kidnapping in the Republic of Dagestan, explores demographic, national and other aspects characterizing the organized criminal groups involved in kidnapping. The author provides some recommendations and possible measures to prevent abduction of citizens, including criminal prosecution of extremists' and terrorists' accomplices in Dagestan, which could significantly affect the reduction of kidnapping in the republic.
