Abstract

Geopolitical significance of the Transbaikal region had already been realized by Russia since the first RussianChinese peace treaty signed in the 17th century. In order to strengthen imperial position in the Amur Region Baikal Oblast with Chita city as the capital was organized. Transbaikal railway entrusted the role of administrativeterritorial and socio-economic leader in Transbaikal region on the Chita city, which it performs up to the second decade of the 20th century. Gaining independence by Mongolia after the Sinkhai Revolution and Russia's desire to draw Mongolia into the orbit of its influence changed the vector of Russian geopolitical strategy in Transbaikal region. Expected construction of the Kyakhta railway through Mongolia to Peking and its connection with the Transsiberian railway nearby Verkhneudinsk placed the Western Transbaikal region with Verkhneudinsk as its centre on the front line. In 1920s the role and importance of Soviet autonomous national administrative unit of Western Transbaikal territory, Buryat-Mongolian ASSR, as the factor in state geopolitical strategy of Soviet Russia and the base of world revolution in the Buddhist East had considerably increased.
