Abstract
The article is devoted to the journalistic and publishing activity of S.P. Koloshin that was socially significant to Russian society of the middle the second half of the 19th century. His work showed that all Russian society worried about social and public problems of the pre-reform time. Koloshin received a lot of feedback from the readers: they argued with him, offered and discussed the problems. By dint of his work in magazines he influenced on formation of public opinion. As the author shows, Koloshin enticed his readers to reflect upon and discuss serious and important issues. Using the examples of the ordinary stories of the ordinary people, he showed the mood of society in anticipation of future large changes.
