Abstract

The article represents a historical review of the works devoted to the history of relationships between the Qing Empire and nomadic communities of Central Asia. The study of frontier policy of the Qing Empire shows principal differences from the traditional model of relationships with nomads of previous dynasties. Overcoming the tendentiousness of Chinese sources, recognition of equivalence of historical sources in the Manchurian language, as well as theoretical achievements in political anthropology in the sphere of nomadic communities’ nature allow revealing essential peculiarities of the model of relationships of the Qing Empire and nomadic communities. These relationships were characterized by integration of nomadic elite into the structure of the imperial government. The Qing Empire was able to work out a state ideology in which archaic Chinese and Central Asian ideas about supreme power were combined.
