Abstract
The history of the national intelligentsia of the Terek region at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is of scientific and public interest. The experience of the past should be in demand when solving the current social and political situation in the North Caucasus. The relevance of the chosen topic is explained by the increased interest of the society towards historical figures who made a significant contribution to the implementation of progressive reforms at that time. Georgy Vasilievich Baev, whose political views and practical activities led to the modernization of Ossetian society in the early 20th century, was a personality of this kind. Despite the fact that significant scientific literature is devoted to Baev, many archival sources, capable of shedding a light on his versatile activity, have not been put yet into scientific circulation.
