Abstract
The article is devoted to the problems of the formation of the ethnic identity of Puerto Rico, the island state of the Caribbean, which has the status of a freely acceding state to the United States. More than a century of development of relations between Puerto Rico and the USA shows not only the implementation of the policy of American progress making in the global world system, but also how dramatic the desire of a small country to gain its own sovereignty while being in the orbit of US geopolitical interests can be.
