Subject of the Study. Problems, trends and prospects of demographic development of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutiya). Purpose of the Study. Identifying the most important problems of demographic development of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutiya) and determining its main trends and prospects.
The main hypothesis is that the Republic of Sakha (Yakutiya) in spite of being the leading region in terms of natural increase of population in the Far East Federal Okrug, has problems constraining the growth of population. Identifying these problems will allow to adjust the state policy in the field of demographic development of the republic.
Research Methods: Analyzing state statistics and sociological studies of changes in population size, fertility, mortality, marriage, social security, healthcare, etc.
The features and trends of demographic development of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutiya) are established. Since the beginning of the 1990s the population of the Republic has decreased. The process was stabilized only in 2014. In spite of the high birth rate in the region. There was a migratory population decline. The problematic factors still are the decline in the number of registered marriages, a high proportion of children born out of wedlock, termination of pregnancy (abortion). There is a trend of decrease in number of women of reproductive age.
Over the past 10 years the region has managed to reduce infant mortality, and overall mortality has received the annual downward trend. The Strategy of Social and Economic Development of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutiya) till 2030 has a goal to achieve the number of inhabitants in the region up to 1 million people in 2022 and increase life expectancy to 77 years. A set of targeted measures to stimulate birth rates, social protection of large families and minority peoples of the Far North, a healthy lifestyle, the priority of family values among young people have been implemented. Conclusions. The necessity of active demographic policy in the region aimed at population growth; decreasing excess male mortality from external causes; provision of high-tech medical care; the increase of proportion of children born from officially registered marriage; the reduction of the age of women giving birth for the first time; speedy solving the problem of reduction of out-migration; increase in birth rate among the urban population are required.
