The article presents the updated criteria and social standards to identify the potential of the Russian middle classes on the basis of an evaluation of education and position in employment. It is shown that the potential of the middle classes taking into account compliance with mentioned standards could reach to 43.2% of the employed population. The structure the potential of the middle classes including the core (17.7% of employed), extended core (13.1% of employed) and the periphery (12.5% of employed) is identified on the basis of criteria and standards of education and position in employment. It is shown that at the present stage, taking into account the distribution of the employed by status and educational structure of employees and self-employed, the basis of the Russian middle classes are employees who contribute most to the number the potential of the middle classes. It is shown that about 25% of the employed couldn't be attributed to the potential of the middle classes, because their education and position in employment do not meet the minimum standards of identification.
