Abstract

The article deals with the causes of the Boxer Rebellion in China, 1898–1901, having been declared on the pages of newspaper «Vostochnoe Obozrenie» published in Irkutsk. In the materials, drawn from the Russian and foreign press, two main positions on the nature of the Chinese events were reflected: rebellion as the Chinese challenge to the striving of European powers to re-organize its way of life according to their own model and the Chinese events as a result of inner contradictions in the ruling class. A regional newspaper’s ability to find its bearings in the information stream allowed it to display all the ideas on the issue being of top importance for future relations between Russia and its Eastern neighbor.
